Ornaments of the City

Street art laboratory
July 27 – August 4, 2019

Context

«Ornaments of the City» street art laboratory led by the Fruits art group, in which the city residents created their works on the streets of Almetyevsk.

The practical segment of the «Ornaments of the City» laboratory was preceded by the theoretical one. At the lecture of the Fruits art group, participating Almetyevsk residents got acquainted with street art in general and with its various specific directions. For example, they learned about the use of stencils, including multilayer ones.

The first French street artist Xavier Prou, better known as Blek Le Rat, is believed to have been the first to paint using stencils. In the 1980s, he began creating stencils for his outdoor work. The first drawings were black rats, which he forced to «run» along the walls of Paris buildings. In his works, Blek le Rat raised issues that are vital to society. As part of one of his projects, he painted the poor and homeless on the streets of different cities, trying to attract public attention and get government assistance for this segment of the population. Now one of the most famous street artists, Banksy, works using stencils. He admits that Blek le Rat influenced his work: «Every time I think I've painted something original, I find that Blek le Rat did the same thing, only 20 years earlier.»

Process

Before creating a work, it is important for a street artist to explore the space of the city, to feel it, to build a possible dialogue with passers-by who become spectators. That is why observation walks through streets and courtyards became a significant part of the laboratory. Under the guidance of the «Fruits» art group, the participants identified potential locations for their future street art objects. First, they photographed them, analyzed the location, the context, and then came up with ideas suitable for it. Familiar courtyards and streets of Almetyevsk have turned into a space for creativity and a new look at everyday life for its residents.

On the final day of «Ornaments of the City», each participant presented their art object, explained what inspired them and what were the difficulties in implementing their ideas.

Participants' works

Tales of the Golden... installation

The Niffle is a furry, long-nosed black animal from the movie «Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them», who has an irresistible craving for objects made of gold. The installation is inspired by the works of street artist Ivan Sery, the author of the «Small Worlds» series, which consists of miniatures of situations and interiors implanted in a part of urban space, often in the brick house walls.

Door from the Monsters, Inc.

In Monsters, Inc. creatures from the monster world entered the people's world through a special door. The author of the work believes that our world is the world of monsters. Attempts to escape may end fatally, because you can't run away from yourself. Live wires inside the electrical panel, on which the door is drawn, serve as the boundaries between worlds.

Substantiation of the biological theory of the origin of oil

The humorous reference to Jules Verne's «Journey to the Center of the Earth» actually raises an important question about the origin of oil – one of the key issues in the modern world. Will mankind ever run out of combustible «blood of dinosaurs» in the consumption race, or is it an endless resource for profit-making?

Psst

The main notion of this work is in surprise, as if someone is peeking around the corner to surprise passers-by and attract their attention, distracting them from their thoughts. There is an allusion to the hospitality of the Tatars, as the hero offers an echpochmak, and at the same time he looks like both Gabdulla Tukay and David.

You can't restore your nerve cells

The main character in this work comes from the game Gravity Defied, where a motorcyclist passes different levels in an unusual state of gravity. The crack on the house looks like a game level. The artist played it as a child: «A lot of my nerve cells were spent on this game.»

Arch of Peoples' Friendship

This work is a readymade. The shape of the arch combines three types of national headdresses: kokoshnik, kalfak and skullcap, which embodies the friendship of peoples. In Russia, guests are traditionally greeted with a loaf of bread, while Tatar hospitality is not complete without tea. The work is located just next to the «Five teapots» mural by Agostino Yakurchi. If you stand far from the arch and find a certain angle, you can get a photo of a person with a headdress on.

Window to the World

The author of the work was inspired by the artist Rene Magritte, whose signature clouds were the foundation for this window. For some, it's a window into a person's inner world that is hidden behind stone curtains. For some, it's a familiar apartment window, while the street is a continuation of the house, which also needs care.

Matrix

This work is based on the Minecraft game. The main goal of this game is mining. It is a commonly known fact that oil, gas, as well as sand and copper are actively extracted in Tatarstan. The artists decided to depict copper and sand on the walls stylized after game blocks.

In this work, wall defects are transformed: even voids formed in the place of a fallen tile can become a place for creativity.

Troubadour

The leaders of the laboratory, the «Fruits» art group, also created a new art object on the city streets. They chose a small lattice on the wall, which closely resembled closed shutters or blinds, as the site for their work.
