Bridge between nature and city
How locals and an artist created a sculpture from willow vines

Context

A snail made from willow vines resembles a bridge between nature and the city.

Land art objects are often created from natural materials. Therefore, they look appropriate both in nature – in the forest or field, and in a city park, and there is no sense of foreignness. The «Snail» is made from willow vines, and it's unique in that the image is dynamic. Immediately after it's created, the sculpture is bright green, then the sun and rain change its color to yellow, brown and gray. It turns out that nature contributes to the emergence of the art object.

The artist Kristina Evstigneeva created her first vine art object in 2016 as part of the Interpretation competition in the Curonian Spit National Park. Prior to that, Christina had already worked with natural materials and created small architectural forms. For her competition project, she took the specific willow vine that grows in the Kaliningrad region. As for the object, she chose the image of an elk, the largest animal that lives in the national park.

In 2021, the artist created a series of snail sculptures for the Kaliningrad Regional Children and Youth Center for Ecology, Local History and Tourism.

Caring is the theme of the final season of the public art program «Tales of the Golden Apples». Caring about loved ones and ourselves, about a dialogue with the outside world, about what remains after us. But this is not only the motive of this particular season; the curators, artists and all those involved have invested this meaning in the program throughout the 5 years of its functioning. In 2022, we simply emphasized this concept. As part of the «Dialogue with the City», a series of master classes were held in Almetyevsk courtyards, where residents created art objects together with artists and other specialists.

Over three summer days, on August 19-21, Almetyevsk residents created a new art object under the guidance of artist and architect Kristina Evstigneeva. During the master class, everyone familiarized themselves with a new technique – weaving from willow vines. The participants collected the vine by the reservoirs of the Almetyevsk district, cleaned it and wove the snail that now resides on the facade of the building at 51 Telmana Street.

Kristina started using the wicker weaving technique in 2016. Her sculptures adorn the parks of the Kaliningrad region – the Curonian Spit National Park and the former park of the Königsberg University (now the Kaliningrad Regional Children and Youth Center for Ecology, Local History and Tourism). The first one showcases the figures of an elk, a roe deer, a seal, a fox, a wild boar and a falcon, all made of willow vines, and the second one – a group of three snails.
