Context

«Almet Mosaic» street art laboratory led by the «Fruits» art group and the artist Rastvornadomu, allowed city residents to create their own works on the streets of Almetyevsk.

As part of the «Dialogue with the City» vector of the final season of the public art program, a series of master classes under the name of «Tales of Golden Apples» was held in Almetyevsk in 2022. Residents created art objects together with artists and other specialists. Caring is the theme of the final season of the public art program. Caring for loved ones and ourselves, about dialogue with the outside world, about what remains after us. But It's not only the 2022 motif – curators, artists and everyone involved have invested this meaning in the program throughout the 5 years of its existence.
In 2019, the Fruits art group (Perm) conducted the «Ornaments of the City» laboratory in Almetyevsk. In 2022, they returned to conduct the «Almet Mosaic» laboratory together with the artist Rastvornadomu (Rostov-on-Don). During the lab, «Fruits» taught the participants how to look at the city from a street artist's viewpoint, and how to choose the sites and come up with works that look original and appropriate on the street. Meanwhile, Rastvornadomu taught people how to make small mosaics from ceramic tiles. They are very durable, easily tolerate any weather and barely deteriorate. Therefore, a work of this type can last quite a long time on the street. Mosaic as a form was just as relevant in ancient Rome, as in Soviet monumental art or now.

Process

On September 8, the laboratory was launched in the reading room of the Central Library (20 Suleimanova St.). The participants met with the artists, set a schedule for the following three days, and listened to a lecture on street art and the use of mosaics.

Before creating a work, it is important for a street artist to explore the urban space, to get a sense of it, to build a possible dialogue with passers-by who will become spectators. Therefore, the observation walks through streets and courtyards became a significant part of this laboratory. Guided by the «Fruits» art group and Rastvornadomu, the participants identified potential locations for their future work, and came up with sketches based on their features (such as an empty frame that resembles a window, or a dark unlit building corner).

After exploring the city, the laboratory participants started creating mosaics. They drew full-size sketches, placed them on thick plastic or plywood, laid out cut-up tile pieces on top of the drawing, carefully selecting them by shape and color. Then wide adhesive tape was glued onto them and transferred to the selected spots, where they were fixed on the wall with a special mixture. A day later, after the mixture had dried, the tape was removed.

Now there are mosaic art objects to be discovered in the First Settlement: an umbrella, a lighthouse, a cat in the window, a light bulb, icicles, a valve on the sewer, and a girl surfing a wave. Thus, the familiar spots in this area have turned into a space for creativity and a new look at everyday life for its residents.

Participants' works

Catsie

Address: 20 Suleymanova st.

Because it is quite large and complex, the «Catsie» mosaic was created by joint efforts of participants and facilitators. The idea of the work sparked in the author's mind when she passed a building entrance and saw two windows and an empty frame intended for advertisements. She wanted to create a third window, from which a cat would look out. Walking around Almetyevsk, she has often seen cats looking thoughtfully out of apartment windows into the street.

Now the mosaic cat in the frame is smiling slyly and sweetly at passers-by. The author hopes that the cat will inspire and support Almetyevsk residents even on gloomy days.

A ray of light

Address: 94 Herzen st.

The author placed a luminous light bulb in an inconspicuous corner, explaining her artistic choice this way: «A small ray of light is enough to dispel the twilight and inspire hope. If you share your light with others, no darkness will extinguish the warmth of hearts.»

Tap

Address: 31 March 8th st.

On the one hand, it is a tap. When it rains, it kind of opens up and water flows out of it. However, this mosaic also resembles a valve, similar to those on gas pipelines and oil installations. It refers to the fact that Almetyevsk is considered the oil capital of Tatarstan.

Mary

Address: 15 March 8th st.

The name «Mary» and the umbrella refer the viewer to the image of Mary Poppins – a kind nanny who taught children to see the unusual even in the most familiar things and who partly gave them this desired protection.

Surfer

Address: intersection of March 8th st. and Riza Fahretdin st.

In this mosaic, a tanned girl on a surfboard jumps out of a pipe into a ditch. For an artist, a person on the crest of a wave is a symbol of pure joy, even if it's a wave coming out of sewage. Having seen this work, passing people in the hustle and bustle of their everyday life can remember the summer, the tenderness of the sea waves and take a break from the routine for a moment.

Lighthouse

Address: 94 Herzen st.

«Lighthouse» continues the marine motif of the previous work. The idea of this art object arose in the course of collective discussions. Many laboratory participants saw the sea horizon in the wall texture, and «Fruits» decided to manifest this image. At the same time, the artists conducted a small experiment: they simplified the lighthouse mosaic as much as possible by assembling it from the remnants of the tile.

Telephone

Address: 28 Riza Fakhretdin st.*

The work was done on a wall where a payphone used to be. Once upon a time there were tens of thousands of payphones on the streets of Russian cities. With the advent of cellular communications, and now instant messengers, street phones have gradually disappeared, leaving traces of voids on the city walls as reminders of themselves. This happened imperceptibly and was already noticed by the artists post factum. They filled one of these voids – a niche in a library wall – with mosaic, creating the telephone receiver piece by piece.

* In June 2023 the building was renovated and the work was dismantled.
